Easdale is a small, remote island on Scotland’s west coast, shaped by centuries of slate quarrying and a rugged Atlantic landscape. The flooded quarries have become quiet, sheltered places that define the island’s unique atmosphere, attracting visitors seeking nature, silence and retreat.
The Contemplation Center Easdale is designed as a place for reflection and observation. It provides spaces for researchers, birdwatchers, visitors and the local community, combining landscape observation with a small spa overlooking the former quarries.
The Center is located at the threshold between the village, the quarry and the Atlantic. Two intersecting volumes separate public and private functions while creating a central space for contemplation, study and observation. A slate plinth anchors the building within the quarry edge, while a lightweight timber structure above creates a calm and tactile atmosphere. The asymmetrical roof responds to the prevailing Atlantic winds and reinforces the building’s relationship with the landscape.
Rather than existing as an isolated object, the project becomes part of the island itself - a quiet place that encourages both observation of the surrounding landscape and moments of reflection.
